Is prophylaxis same as scaling?

Prophylaxis and scaling are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different aspects of dental cleaning. While both aim to improve oral health, they serve distinct purposes.

Key Points to Consider:

  • Prophylaxis is a general term for professional teeth cleaning.

  • Scaling specifically refers to the removal of plaque and tartar from below the gumline.

  • Both are essential for preventing gum disease and tooth decay.

  • Prophylaxis is typically performed regularly, while scaling may be necessary if there is more significant tartar buildup.

  • Scaling is often part of a comprehensive prophylaxis treatment.

What is Prophylaxis?

Routine Teeth Cleaning

Prophylaxis, also known as a professional dental cleaning, is a preventive procedure designed to maintain oral hygiene. During this process, the dentist or hygienist removes plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth, typically above the gumline. Prophylaxis is generally done every six months or as recommended by your dentist to prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral issues. It’s a routine procedure aimed at keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

While prophylaxis includes plaque and tartar removal, it’s a more general, all-encompassing term for the cleaning process. It also includes polishing the teeth to make them feel smooth and remove surface stains.

What is Scaling?

Focused on Tartar Buildup

Scaling, on the other hand, is a more specific procedure aimed at removing hardened tartar (also known as calculus) that has formed below the gumline. Tartar is plaque that has hardened over time, and it can’t be removed through normal brushing or even regular prophylaxis. Scaling may be recommended if there is significant tartar buildup that can lead to gum disease or other dental issues. It’s usually a part of a more extensive dental cleaning, especially for patients with periodontal disease.

Unlike prophylaxis, which is part of regular maintenance, scaling is often done when the tartar buildup is extensive and needs a deeper clean to prevent further complications.

If you’re concerned about your oral health or need a deeper cleaning, talk to your dentist about whether scaling or prophylaxis is right for you.
