Causes of Gum Disease
Bacteria in dental plaque is the main cause of gum disease. However, some factors may also contribute to periodontal disease. These include:
- Medications
The saliva which has a protective effect on gums and teeth and some medicines may reduce its production. Dry mouth is likely to cause more plaque build-ups. This may lead to tooth decay. Other medicines also enlarge the gum, making it more susceptible to bacteria.
- Smoking
The chemicals found in smoking causes more tartar to build up in the teeth. Once the patient already has gum disease, smoking could prevent the gums from healing. It causes deeper periodontal pockets and gathers more bacteria. Smokers are also likely to lose more bone as the disease progresses.
- Diseases
There is a higher risk of developing gum disease if the patient is already suffering from certain health conditions. The diseases include:
- Diabetes- People with diabetes are at higher risk of developing infections like gum disease because of high blood sugar.
- Cancer and HIV infection- These conditions weaken the immune system. Hence, making the person prone to infection.
- Poor oral practices
Improper brushing could be missed out a lot of hidden bacteria which may cause plaque to build-up. The plaque will then lead to tartar and damage the tooth. Once the tooth is infected, it can spread its infection to gums and cause inflammation.
